Christian Dior-New look

Christian diors, new look was a major shift in post-war fashion, after the war period of rationing it was a refreshing change that was wanted and supported by many women. It was a look that used yards and yards of fabric ,something that had not been available to women for a very long time. This made it something that was even more desirable women wanted a change from hardly using any materials and fabric to be able to start using it by the load.

For many the new look wasn't affordable but was a point of inspiration and women that couldn't afford the types of clothing did whatever they could to gain this look, they used everyday materials like blackout curtains to create dior's skirts and bought paper patterns from which they produced their own copy of the garments.

It was very impactful and reached out to many women as Dior had the idea of making women feminine once again through their clothing,he made everything softer and longer, fabrics were more flowing and had a very rich look to them.

Cristabel Balenciaga

The silhouette is only important if it makes a dress elegant for a woman, nothing else counts.” – Cristobal Balenciaga.

Balenciaga was known as the master of shape, his work throughout the 1950s worked on creating a new shape and figure for women through cuts and shaping of clothing. He played with the silhouette to create completely new looks that nobody had seen.
Either removing the waist totally and broadening the shoulders to create the cocoon shape or creating high waisted skirts that showed off the womens waist and showed off her hourglass figure. It was a time of experimentation new fabrics were being developed and used by many designers in order to portray the true beauty of women and fashion.

Jacques Fath

One of the famous designers of this time period were jacques fath,he was known for his oppulent dresses and his style of making women look beautiful,he really took the shape of a womans figure into account when designing his garments and created pieces that really accentuated the figure. This was a big change for women as all they were used to wearing were practical "work" clothing during the period of the war.It was a chance for them to get their femininty back.

1950's

I have decided to look at the 1950s and I feel this was the time period of real change, for men, for women and children. It was a society of change. The 1950s was a really impactful time for the people living in it, it was a time for people to come out of the war period and rebuilt their lives in a more positive manner. It was the start of a new beginning.
